I’ve come to develop a more negative view of Bethesda’s most recent mainline Elder Scrolls foray, and Enderal has helped me put all of that into words. And finally, I’ll briefly touch on the many ways it shines a light on all of Skyrim’s greatest weaknesses. I’ll cover a little about the story and characters (in non-spoiler terms), as well as how emotionally devastating its ending is. I want to talk a bit about Enderal’s design and gameplay systems. Since Enderal hasn’t left my mind for long since completing it, I feel that it’s important to I write this down and share it. I now think of Enderal: Forgotten Stories as one of the best video games I’ve ever played. Having finished it recently, I now find myself thinking of Enderal not as just a Skyrim mod, nor even its own standalone game and RPG.
It easily transcends the boundaries of Skyrim, overcoming many of the gameplay issues and lacking elements of its source material.

That story, world, the characters contained within, and the full span of Enderal’s adventure? Those are so fantastically realized that it feels disingenuous to call Enderal a mere mod. There’s less reliance on scaling enemies, and more on not reaching into areas beyond your means, as the story will nudge you there when you’re ready. It is less the freeform “do whatever you want” simulator that Skyrim quickly becomes Enderal is instead a focused, story-driven RPG with a splash of open-world content that better utilizes the space. Skyrim’s general DNA is still inevitably present in movement and systems, but the way it works is wholly redone.

This mod completely replaces the landmass and setting of Skyrim with an original one, and overhauls most of the gameplay systems as well. It's the definitive and complete version of the tale, and is worth playing again if you've only dabbled in the original previously.
The updated Forgotten Stories expansion from 2019 saw a number of additions to quests and content, as well as a standalone release on Steam. Developed by a dedicated team of German modders by the name of SureAI, the first version of Enderal was released back in 2016. It's a bit fiddly for now, but apparently a Steam version of the special edition mod is planned for March.Enderal: Forgotten Stories is a total conversion mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

You can find Enderal SE over on Nexus Mods where its uploaders explain the process of converting your original Enderal download into one compatible with Special Edition. While Skyrim wasn't the cheeriest game in the world, Enderal can be quite depressing when its plot kicks off and you start working through its mysteries and realising just how bad things are. "It helps that it genuinely feels like a world in and of itself, and a very different one. "Enderal is worth the occasional frustrations that come of its own making and the ones inherited from Skyrim," Richard Cobbett says. Or modders who mod mods? Anyhow, some Enderal fans have stepped in to convert the biggo dark RPG to the newer and slightly better version of Skyrim.īack when it launched in 2016, RPS's Enderal review called it excellent. Due to work on their new game, SureAI said they wouldn't be working on a Special Edition version of Enderal. Enderal's plenty a game in its own right, other than the dependency. One that doesn't require owning Skyrim, that is.

Enderal's creators have moved on to a new project, but fans of the mod have created a version that will work with Skyrim Special Edition if you're avoiding going back to oldrim for your modding needs.Įnderal's creators SureAI released the final update to their huge Skyrim conversion mod just last month. The giant overhaul mod that creates a new RPG within Skyrim's engine now has its own Special Edition upgrade.
